Undoubtedly one of the beauty industry’s best-kept secrets, electrolysis has been used as a hair removal treatment since 1875. Despite its long, effective history, there still seems to be a general lack of understanding surrounding what the process entails and who it is right for (spoiler: everyone).

To help bring you up to speed, here are five myths about electrolysis hair removal, debunked.

1. It is too painful.

One of the main reasons individuals choose not to ask “how does electrolysis hair removal work?” and learn more about the options is because they believe that it is too painful for a treatment. Unfortunately, this myth is stopping people from benefiting from the multitude of benefits that electrolysis hair removal can bring.

While everyone has their own personal comfort level when it comes to pain, generally, electrolysis hair removal only produces a small amount of pain or discomfort (similar to the tingling sensation you may get from a mosquito bite).

2. It results in too many side effects.

When done correctly, electrolysis hair removal should not produce long-lasting side effects. That is why it is so crucial that you see a well-trained operator at a center that follows the highest hygienic standards and that you follow their pre-, during, and post-treatment recommendations.

That being said, for a couple of days after the electrolysis hair removal treatment, you may find some minor redness, red dots, or whiteheads on the treated skin area. However, these can swiftly be soothed by the recommended hydrating and repair creams.

3. It can only treat some areas.

Unlike other forms of hair removal, electrolysis is able to treat all areas of the body (eyebrows, bikini, face, toes/fingers, abdomen, thighs, chest, and legs) and works on all individuals – no matter what the color of hair or skin the client has. This is a game-changer for individuals all around the world who have been unable to find an effective hair removal treatment.

Additionally, as the treatment doesn’t require any harmful chemicals, it can be used on individuals with even the most sensitive skin. If you are still unsure how this process works, make sure to check out this electrolysis hair removal demonstration.

4. It is excessively expensive.

After the amount of pain, the next primary reason why individuals don’t investigate their electrolysis options is their presumed price tag.

While the initial cost is certainly greater compared to that of other forms of hair removal (shaving at home, etc.), the reality is that, due to the hair growth cycle, electrolysis is actually very affordable.

An individual who chooses to undergo the required series of treatments will save expenses as they won’t need to commit to lifelong maintenance of their unwanted body hair with temporary methods. Instead, by opting for regular electrolysis hair removal sessions for up to one year, you will never have to think about spending time or money on shaving, laser touch-ups, threading, bleaching, or waxing sessions again!

Additionally, thanks to developing technologies and the increasing demand for electrolysis providers, these services have never been more affordable.

5. It doesn’t work.

The biggest myth of them all is that electrolysis hair removal doesn’t work, and this couldn’t be farther from the truth. In fact, this treatment has been around for over 125 years (which explains why it has had the time to be perfected).

Today, electrolysis is 100 percent FDA-approved and is the only form of permanent hair removal on the market. This means that while other methods may succeed in long-term hair reduction, electrolysis is the only clinically proven method to eradicate the hair follicle.
